Run A Homeless Shelter

There's always a need for more resources to help the homeless. You can give someone a new life if you provide links to job training, housing help and medical care. Some people, though, are reluctant to go to a shelter because they experienced violence, sexual assault, robbery and other crimes while staying in one. Here are some things to think about.

Instructions

1. Learn about homelessness. The National Coalition for the Homeless has fact sheets and reports on its website about homeless populations, mental illness, substance abuse and other issues you need to know about to run your shelter.

2. Collaborate with other organizations in your community that aid the homeless. Contact all the food banks and soup kitchens in your area. Work with nonprofits that serve women, children, families, the mentally ill and substance abusers.

3. Contact local businesses and see how they can help. Restaurants can donate food. Retail outlets can give clothes. A health professional can educate the homeless on diseases they should watch out for.

4. Set rules and stick to them. A curfew can keep thieves from sneaking in and out at night when everyone's asleep. Show zero tolerance for drugs and alcohol. Separate single men and women and, to make them feel safer, place the women close to the person on watch.

5. Have one person in charge of coordinating volunteers. Always have a backup to fill in on short notice for the night shift.

6. Develop a good relationship with your local police. Make them aware of the rules you've set and how you're going to enforce them. Ask for their suggestions on making your shelter safe.

7. Hold fundraising events and encourage your homeless beneficiaries to participate. Clothe them respectably and train them on interact with those who will attend. Being in close contact with the people they're helping makes a more powerful impression on your supporters.

Prepare For Playing Golf In The Rain

You've planned a golf outing with your buddies but the forecast calls for rain. You can cancel the game or plan to dodge the raindrops. Before you decide, consider that you may play your best round yet if you're prepared.

Instructions

1. Pack like the pros. They know stock their golf bag for bad weather, including a large umbrella, a complete rainsuit, several towels and plenty of extra gloves to keep your hands dry.

2. Keep your hands in your pockets to keep them warm and dry until you're ready to play at each hole.

3. Protect your clubs from the elements. Cover the top of your golf bag to keep the rain from running down the shafts and wetting the grips. If your club does get wet, wrap a handkerchief around the grip.

4. Trade your glove towel in for a dry one when it gets wet.

5. Stuff your towel between the spokes of your folded umbrella to keep it dry.

6. Note that your game will change with the weather. Expect to add at least one stroke per hole to account for the rain. Remember that a wet green equals a slow green, so you can aim right for the flag. Who knows? You might come in under par.

Search For Freshwater Tropical Fish

Golffish are hardy and readily available freshwater fish.

The majority of common tropical freshwater aquarium fish originate in tropical rain forests across the globe. Most of these species have been bred in captivity and are available to hobbyists through breeders, aquarium dealer and pet shops. Many freshwater tropical fish are social and can be included in a community aquarium. Certain popular types, such as the oscar fish, tend to be aggressive and may require a species-only tank. Because freshwater tropical fish that are tank spawned or bred can become diseased just like wild fish, aquarists should choose their specimens with care.

Instructions

1. Decide on the species of fish you would like to keep. Aquarium dealers tend to hold a large variety of the more commonly available fish types, but may not always stock an equal selection of rare fish.

2. Visit your local dealer to source the readily available community fish, such as guppies, mollies, angelfish, neons, catfish and platys.

3. Contact a fish breeder if you are looking for a specific fish type that is not available at your pet dealer. Many aquarists specialize in breeding specific species of tropical fish. These hobbyists are dedicated to producing healthy specimens of high quality. The better breeders are always willing to offer advice as required.

4. Take a fish identification book to the dealer's shop. Choose fish that have the vivid colors that are shown in the color photographs.

5. Observe how the fish breathes. Healthy fish that are not stressed move their gill plates in a slow fashion. Diseased and stressed fish exhibit very rapid gill plate movements. Do not purchase these specimens.

6. Look for obvious signs of disease on fish, such as external parasites. Do not accept specimens from a tank that contains diseased fish, even if the individual fish you want appears to be healthy.

7. Ask to see the fish eat. Healthy fish always appear to be hungry and feed as soon as food is offered to them. Don't purchase fish that do not eat immediately or at least show interest in the food.

8. Ask to view a selection of social fish if you want a community tank. Large, aggressive specimens will require an aquarium to themselves.

Program A Sears Garage Door Opener 139 539

Modern models feature security enhancements that alleviate this problem and also provide additional options such as resetting the synchronization code in case a remote transmitter is lost or stolen. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Locate the garage door opener on the ceiling. Remove your vehicle if necessary to gain access to the unit. Place a ladder under the garage door opener so you can reach the control panel.

Qualify As An Olympic Contender

Many children have a dream to one day represent their country as an Olympic contender. The reality is that few will actually see their dreams come true. Athletes must be top-class to qualify for the Olympics, leaving the rest of the world to be spectators. If you want to be among that special few that contend for Olympic medals, try following these steps.

Instructions

1. Choose a sport to focus on. Qualifying as an Olympic contender is difficult. Most Olympic level athletes have a sport they excel in that they choose to compete in.

2. Get a personal coach. Training for the Olympics requires the expertise of a coach. Find one that has a good coaching record, is respected by athletes, and whose priorities match the goals to be accomplished.

3. Learn true devotion. In order to qualify for the Olympics, an athlete has to be the best of the best. Practicing is the only way to attain this perfection. It is common for an Olympic contender to be a full-time athlete, practicing several hours every day.

4. Compete at elite events. These give athletes the chance to get used to high-profile events, and allow them to network with other athletes and coaches. It is also a great way to assess skill levels compared to other top contenders.

5. Try out for the Olympic squad. The final step in making Olympic dreams come true is at the Olympic trials. Every sport has a competition where they pick the top athletes to represent the country. Competing--and winning--is the only way to get to the Olympics as a contender.

Pick A Tattoo

The right tattoo takes much consideration.

The right tattoo can have a lasting positive effect while one chosen in haste and without adequate reflection can have a lasting negative one. The best way to decide on the perfect tattoo is to involve your artist and allow a collaborative effort to match your ideas with someone who can visualize the finished product. In addition to the design of the tattoo, you will also need to determine the proper size, style and color scheme.

Instructions

1. Choose the area of your body you wish to tattoo. Different spots on your body are ideal for different design shapes and sizes. The larger and flatter the surface, the larger and more detailed the tattoo can be.

2. Determine the particular style you want for your tattoo, be it color, black and gray, mural, portrait or other.

3. Tell your tattoo artist exactly what you want your tattoo to express. Generally you want a tattoo to express a fragment of your life that will never change, such as your ancestral lineage, representation of a family member or deep and undying passion for music, film or a sports franchise.

4. Be open to any suggestions your artist may have. Even though it is your body and your tattoo, your artist will have much more experience with what types of tattoos will turn out favorably and which may look out of place or uneven.

5. Have the design stenciled to your body and view it from several different angles in the mirror. Make sure you completely approve of the design and its placement before undergoing the actual tattoo process.

Match A Dog Breed To Your Family

Enjoy a long, loving relationship.

The time has come to welcome a new, tail-wagging friend to the family. Whether you are adopting a puppy, a full-grown dog, a pure bred or a mixed breed, it is important to consider common characteristics of various, possible breeds before making a final choice. Although the choice ultimately comes down to the connection you and your family feels when you meet a dog for the first time, researching common traits of possible dogs increases the likelihood that you bring home a new companion that is compatible with your family's lifestyle.

Instructions

1. Take a good look at your living quarters. Do you live in a small apartment in the city or do you live in a farmhouse with lots of wide-open space around. If your space is limited, consider a smaller, non-sporting breed, such as French bulldog, or a toy breed, such as Chihuahua. Don't forget, even small breeds still need walks. Breeds like greyhound and standard schnauzers do well with small to medium-size yards. If you live in the country and want an active dog that will work outside with you, choose from a working breed, such as boxer; a sporting breed, such as Labrador retriever; or a herding breed, such as German shepherd.

2. Eliminate breeds that may pose a potential threat to any infants or young children in your family, such as German shepherd, Rottweiler and pit bull. Breeds known as being well-suited for families with young children include standard poodle, cavalier King Charles spaniel and Boston terrier. Some toy breeds tend to bark or nip and are also not suitable when an infant is present, including Maltese and Pomeranian.

3. Look outside. How precious is your outdoor environment. If your family spends hours manicuring flower beds or cultivating fruit and vegetable gardens, narrow your choices down to breeds that tend not to dig. You might want to avoid terrier breeds, which are especially known for digging.

4. Consider if anyone in your family is highly partial to an environment free of pet hair. If so, choose a light-shedding breed, such as toy poodle, Yorkshire terrier, American water spaniel, Bolognese, or giant schnauzer. Dog breeds that tend to shed more include golden retriever, Labrador retriever, Rottweiler, husky, beagle and Dalmatian.

Safely Strengthen Hamstrings After An Injury

Safely Strengthen Hamstrings After an Injury

The hamstring is the muscle in the back part of your leg below the buttocks. It is naturally the weakest muscle in the leg and the most unpredictable in it's recovery from injury. The following steps will explain the safest way to recover and strengthen your hamstring after an injury.

Sell Your Sperm

Sperm donors help fuel the fertility industry, but they don't do it for free. If you're eligible, you can earn extra income by providing samples to companies that will, in turn, sell your sperm to needy couples. This practice has been going on for decades and the need for sperm donation continues to grow.

You don't have to be brilliant or gorgeous to make money selling sperm. You don't have to fit any ethnic profile. However, there are some basic qualifications which make you appropriate for sperm donation. Once you've met those qualifications, selling sperm is as easy as finding the company and practices that suit your lifestyle.

There is some confusion over the legal responsibilities of recruited sperm donors, but they don't apply to anonymous donors.

Instructions

1. Find a buying sperm bank. You can find places to sell your sperm online or by contacting a local fertility clinic. Find a link to one in the References section. Simply ask for banks or clinics currently purchasing or selling samples. Typically, sperm banks will require that you live within an hour's drive of the clinic and that you are available to make deposits in the laboratory six to eight times per month for at least six months.

2. Shop around. If you have a particular talent, aptitude, or accomplishment, you may find higher quality sperm banks are interested in you. If you have no such talents, do not be discouraged. A clean bill of health is the most important qualification.

3. Contact the clinic. Each sperm purchaser will have their own set of guidelines for who they will accept. Typically, sperm donors must be over 18 years old, but under 44. Age is becoming more important to sperm dealers as associations between autism and paternal age become more evident.

You should also be in good health. A family history of mental or physical disorders will likely disqualify you from any donation program. Because your family history is crucial to your inclusion in the program, you will be eliminated from consideration if you were adopted. Be honest when you report your family history. Failure to disclose a disorder like schizophrenia could result in years of heartache for the buying family.

4. Apply to become a donor. The company that purchases your sperm will likely have an in-depth application process for sperm donors. You will likely be asked to either participate in a physical with one of their doctors or to provide medical records from your own doctor. You will also need to provide a great deal of information about your family medical history.

5. Review the contract. Not all sperm banks share the same process or compensation rates. Make sure you are agreeing to terms and activities you are comfortable with.

6. Create and sell your sample. The bank you choose to sell your sperm to will have an established routine for donors. Make sure you follow their guidelines perfectly.

7. Keep selling. There is no rule saying you can only sell to one clinic or bank. You should, however, disclose to any potential buying clinic that you have sold your sperm elsewhere. It may be necessary for your sperm to be transported to another location to avoid complications.

Reduce Weight Faster

Making small adjustments to your current lifestyle will speed up weight loss.

To lose weight rapidly, there is no need to resort to crash dieting. Crash diets may promise fast weight loss, but they can seriously damage your health. According to Epigee.com, crash dieting increases your risk for osteoporosis, nutritional deficiencies, eating disorders and organ damage. When dieting, there are healthy, manageable adjustments you can make to speed up the rate you lose weight. There is no need to risk your health.

Instructions

1. Get into the habit of eating a small, nutritious meal or snack every three hours of the day to speed up the rate at which your body processes and utilizes food. Replace the traditional three square meals per day with five to six smaller meals. Avoid skipping meals because this will make your body think you are starving it and makes it hold onto fat instead of getting rid of it.

2. Avoid foods that slow down your metabolism such as sugary, fattening and processed foods and alcohol. Eat high-fiber, unprocessed foods such as vegetables and fruits. Consume lean protein such as fish and chicken instead of fatty meats and look for foods with unsaturated "heart healthy" fats instead of trans fats and saturated fats which are commonly found in cakes, cookies and fried foods.

3. Sip 3 to 5 cups of green tea daily. Colonhealth.net states that green tea contains substances called catechins which speed up your metabolism so you burn extra calories on a daily basis.

4. Drink at least eight glasses of water daily because it helps metabolize fat, makes you feel full, promotes digestive health and flushes out toxins and excess sodium so you don't get bloated. Consume cold water at 40 degrees Fahrenheit because your body has to work harder to heat up the water resulting in extra caloric burn and faster weight loss.

5. Add short, high-intensity bursts to your cardiovascular exercise. Mayoclinic.com states that interval training burns more calories than regular cardio. Jog at a comfortable pace for several minutes and accelerate to a fast sprint for one to two minutes. Go back and forth from the moderate jog to the fast sprint and complete your cardio session this way.

6. Include full-body weight training to your exercise routine on two to three non-consecutive days of the week. Strength training breaks down your muscles and to repair and restore them a lot of energy is needed. Your metabolism is activated all day long so you burn fat even when you are resting.

Own A Shell Gas Station

Buying a gas station can be a very profitable investment

Even when the economy is at its worst, buying a Shell gas station can still be a wise investment. Gasoline is almost recession proof and people will always need to buy it. If the gas station that you are considering buying offers other products and services in addition to gas, that is a definite plus for you, the buyer. Look into the best options for you, which could be either a straight sale or buying a franchise, in this lucrative business venture.

Instructions

Finding the right gas station

1. Find a Shell gas station that is available in an area in which you wish to operate a business. Do this by looking in the newspaper and online for gas stations that are for sale. You can also contact a business broker or a Realtor.

2. Set up an appointment with prospects in which you are interested. You will want to look over the gas station and the property that it sits on, view the location, determine if it is easily accessible to customers, and find out the reason it is for sale. Also, ask to see the financial statements for the business. Check out if this gas station offers other amenities such as a convenience store or any other service that can generate a revenue stream in addition to just gas.

3. Ask about franchising this gas station. Find out what the terms of a franchising agreement are and what the franchising fees are. Pay special attention to the brand names of gas that you are allowed to sell under these agreements.

4. Look over all of the existing permits and licenses that the business has. Then, check with the state in which you are buying to see if you will be able to get licensing and how much everything costs.

Closing the deal

5. Prepare to make an offer. Once you have made your offer you will wait for it to be accepted, rejected, or for a counter offer to be made. Be ready to handle any of these outcomes. Always plan to negotiate. Barter back and forth, if necessary, until you find a price with which you are comfortable.

6. Prepare a business plan and make sure you have covered everything. Hire someone who knows about the industry to assist in writing this or have them write it for you.

7. Approach your lender with your business plan and ask for financing. Once approved, prepare to close the deal.

Prevent Blisters

Blisters are uncomfortable and painful skin conditions that can occur from harsh rubbing, chafing and other irritations. Blisters can make every day activities difficult. Thus it's best to avoid anything that could potentially cause blisters. Prevention really is the best medicine. Here's prevent blisters.

Instructions

Wear Comfortable Shoes

1. Wear comfortable shoes with extra room in the toes and heels. Avoid strappy shoes or footwear that constricts your toes. Also, wear cushioned socks with your shoes.

2. Rub a few strokes of Body Glide on blister prone areas such as the first and fifth toes as well as the heels. Do this on days you will be wearing less comfortable shoes.

3. Pour some cornstarch on your feet and rub it on the heels and toes and soles of your feet. Cut moleskin pieces to cover your heels and outside edges of your toes when wearing tight or ill-fitting shoes. This will prevent your feet from rubbing up against the inner surface and blistering.

4. Wet two tea bags and place them on the blister prone areas at night. Allow the tea to absorb into the skin. The tea has been shown to toughen these soft areas and help prevent blisters.

5. Put a bandage on if you rub against something and feel a sore spot. A tear in the skin or red soreness is the beginning of a blister. Stop it before it starts.

Running shoes are designed to provide maximum overall shock absorption for the foot," says Joanie Greggains, TV and KGO Radio fitness expert and author of "Fit Happens." Record Your Voice To Music Beats

Connect an external microphone for ideal quality.

Music beats may consist of nothing more than recorded audio, which you can expand upon at any time by placing additional layers on the recording. For example, if you want to add a vocal track or voice over to a pre-recorded beat, you can do so from the comfort of your bedroom. You just need the right equipment, which you can obtain on a modest or even non-existent budget.

Instructions New). Otherwise, look for a "New" or "New Project" button.

4. Drag your recorded beat file onto the project window. You should then see a horizontal bar spanning across the window, with a shaded region containing wavy lines (your recorded beat). 5. Create a second track. On your menu bar or project window, you should see an option that reads "New Track," "Create Track" or "Create Audio Track." Select the option, and then choose the "Audio Track" option if asked to select between "MIDI" and "Audio."

6. Connect a pair of headphones to your computer. This will allow you to hear the beat while recording your vocals without picking up unwanted sound from your computer speakers.

7. Connect a microphone, if applicable. If you have only your computer's internal or external microphone, you can use it to record, but your quality will be limited. If you have an XLR microphone, connect it directly to your computer using an XLR-to-USB cable, or using an XLR cable and a USB audio interface (external sound card).

8. Click the track title (usually reading "Track 1" or "Audio 1") in the left column of your new audio track, and click the "Record" button. If you cannot find a title in the left column, try clicking the horizontal track space itself. The point is to highlight the track for recording. As the beat plays through your headphone, sing along (or speak) through the microphone. When you finish, click the "Stop" button.

9. Save your completed beat by clicking (File > Save) on the menu bar, or selecting a "Save" button, once you're satisfied with it. To export it as an audio file, like an MP3, locate your "Bounce" or "Export" option. Enter a name for your finished product and click "Save."

Sell Your Sperm To A Sperm Bank

Find a quality sperm bank

A sperm bank will buy your sperm once you are accepted into their program. Whether for financial or other personal reasons you decide to do this. It takes from about 1 week to 6 months depending on the sperm bank you use and you can make anywhere from a few dollars to thousands of dollars a year doing this. Here's the steps you need to go through to get accepted and get paid.

Instructions

1. You need to search for a local sperm donor bank. Once you find one apply to their donor program. Sperm banks have varying requirements. A good quality sperm bank will pay you the most, but require more samples from you. If you can't find one ask your doctor for the location of a local sperm donor bank.

Sperm bank requirements include:

You should be tall, at least 5' 9" Most Moms want tall donors

You should be between 18 and 40. Sorry, most places want donations from younger men.

Don't be fat, your weight should be proportionate to your height.

You should be well educated, the more eductation the better

You should not be adopted.

You should be able to provide a deposit 4-6 times a month for 6 months

You should have no deseases such as hepatitus, HIV, Herpes or any other desease that can affect a baby

2. Once you have found a local sperm bank and apply to to become a sperm donor. Usually they will screen you over the phone, and if you pass that will invite you in to fill out a questionnaire and possibly take an initial semen sample.

3. The sperm bank will test your sample for count, motility, freeze-ability and deformity. If they look good you will be invited back to the sperm bank for another round of testing.

4. The sperm bank will do more tests including a blood test and a urine test. Most likely you will leave yet another sample at the sperm bank.

5. The sperm bank will thoroughly test you for diseases, STDs and genetic problems, and, if they are all negative you will be asked to sign a contract to become a sperm donor.

6. Generally a sperm bank will have you agree to providing 1-2 'deposits' a week for up to 6 months. If you agree to this you can start making money in as little as a week or two.

Show Example Fundraising Letters To Businesses

Fundraising letters can be sent to both individuals and businesses.

Charities, nonprofit organizations, and individuals often create fundraising campaigns to solicit donations. Creating a fundraising letter is a simple, but necessary tool in any fundraising campaign. Fundraising letters should convey the need for a donation, why a donation should be made, and make the donation. Letters can be distributed by either e-mail or regular mail, but they must be written well to motivate businesses and individuals to contribute to your cause.

Instructions

1. Search online for sample fundraising letters. Review sample letters on such websites as Fundraiser Help or Better Fundraising Ideas. Look at successful fundraising websites, such as Susan G. Komen for the Cure or the American Heart Association. Decide which wording has the most impact, and make note of it. Print any samples you'd like to keep for reference, or sothers.

2. Create your own sample fundraising letter. Select a professional letter template in a word processing program such as Microsoft Word. Be descriptive. Tell the story of the cause you're hoping to promote in your lead paragraph. For example, if you're raising donations for an animal shelter, briefly describe one animal's story, from the plight of being homeless, to the joy of adoption.

In a separate paragraph, write a detailed statement about the organization or individual for whom donations are being raised. Explain the larger mission of the organization, and why it's worthy of financial support. Finally, request a donation, and inform the reader of how and where to donate. Include the contact information of the person in charge of the fundraiser, should the reader have additional questions.

3. Address your letter to the appropriate decision-maker at the business or businesses you're targeting. Many business websites include staff and contact information, such as a mailing address and e-mail addresses. Target the chief executive officers and/or the marketing director for the company. Call and ask the receptionist, if you can't find contact information online.

4. Mail, e-mail or deliver the letters in person. Call and ask for a short appointment with the individual at the business you're targeting. Hand-deliver the sample letter to the businessman and explain the reason for your visit. Keep the visit short, and leave your business card along with the letter. Thank him for his time and consideration.

Run A Wire From A Battery To The Inside Of The Car In A Ford Focus

Car wiring must be done carefully and properly.

Vehicle owners often add accessories that require new wiring from the battery to new components in their Ford Focus cars. The wires must be laid carefully and properly so the original equipment is protected and so any new accessory works properly.

Instructions

1. Use the crescent wrench to loosen and disconnect the battery cables. The Ford Focus has side-mount batteries on most models.

2. Use the pliers to strip about half an inch of insulation from each end of the red wire. Preparing wires for hook-up generally is the same for all vehicles.

3. Use the pliers' 22-gauge crimp notch to attach the 3/8-inch ring connector to one end of the red 22-gauge wire.

4. Cover the length of the wire with the plastic wire cover to protect it from vibration and debris damage.

5. Use the zip ties to secure the length of the wire from the battery to the engine compartment's firewall, where it will be put through the firewall's wire harness. Good locations for the Ford Focus are along the right fender and across the firewire to the main wire harness.

6. Run the new wire through the vehicle's original wire harness to the new component to be installed.

7. Use the appropriate type of 22-gauge wire connect to link the black wire to the new component and a ground point and the red wire to the live connection. All vehicles use a "hot" wire and a ground wire to properly power a new component.

8. Connect the red wire to the red terminal on the battery, and use the crescent wrench to reconnect the battery cables. Depending on the type of component to be wired, the process could take from 20 minutes to an hour from battery to component.

Recover From A Marathon

Running a marathon wreaks temporary havoc on leg muscle strength and endurance (not to mention your joints,) so don't ignore your body's need to rest and recover after such a grueling event.

Instructions

1. Treat injured areas or sore muscles with an ice pack immediately upon finishing. Or, ideally, sit in a bathtub filled with cool water for 20 minutes.

2. Consider taking anti-inflammatories, such as ibuprofen, to help reduce swelling in traumatized muscles. But ask your doctor first, and always take them with food.

3. Tank up on fluids after the race to replenish what you lost during the race and prevent dehydration.

4. Include plenty of carbohydrates in your diet for several days after the race to help your body rebuild torn muscle.

5. Elevate your legs whenever you're sitting or lying down for the next week, and continue to ice injured areas to help with the healing.

6. Stretch gently in the morning, before you go to bed and during the course of each day. Do a 1 to 2 minute warm-up, jogging in place, before stretching.

7. Get a massage or self-massage your legs and other sore areas within a week after the event.

8. Avoid running or engaging in high-intensity activity during the first week of recovery.

9. Plan nonrunning activities - walking, swimming, cycling - after your first week of recovery. Now that you're not in training, you'll have more free time.

10. Begin running again only when you feel you're ready. Don't start planning your next marathon yet; focus on recovering from the one you just ran.

Prevent Calf Cramps While Sleeping

Prevent Calf Cramps While Sleeping

Night leg cramps, or nocturnal leg cramps, are a sudden tightening of the muscles in the leg, usually in the calves. Calf cramps can be so painful that they wake you from a sound sleep. The risk of experiencing leg cramps increases with age. As many as 70 percent of the elderly may experience night leg cramps, according to Tufts University. Possible causes of calf cramps can be muscle overexertion, prolonged sitting or standing, nutritional deficiencies or dehydration. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to prevent calf cramps while you're sleeping.

Instructions

1. Drink fluids throughout the day to prevent dehydration. Include 8 to 16 ounces of tonic water. Tonic water contains quinine, which may help prevent muscle cramps by lessening the excitability of nerves, according to Harvard Medical School.

2. Wear comfortable flat shoes that offer good support. Avoid wearing high heels, if possible.

3. Stretch your leg muscles three times each day. Place your hands against a wall. Take one or two steps backward until your legs are straight. Keep your heels on the floor until you feel a strong stretch in your calves. Hold for 10 seconds.

4. Untuck the sheets and blankets at the foot of your bed each night. Tucked-in bedding can press your feet down, which will tighten the calf muscles.

5. Include potassium-rich foods in your diet, such as bananas, apricots, tomatoes, broccoli, cabbage, grapefruit and oranges. A diet lacking in potassium can cause calf cramps.

6. Place a heating pad on your calves for 10 minutes before going to sleep.

7. Cut back on consuming sugar and caffeine, as they can hamper your body's ability to absorb vital nutrients from food.

8. Ride a stationary bicycle before going to bed.

9. Sleep with your toes pointing up, not downward or sideways.

Match Gel Coat Colors

Match Gel Coat Colors

The term gel coat refers to any resin-based paint that is applied to items constructed of fiberglass. Gel coat is most frequently used in the marine industry to repair and restore the exterior surfaces of boats, jet skis and other water vehicles. According to Boatus.com, matching the gel coat color is one of the hardest parts of repairing a boat. Properly matching the exterior color of the boat with the gel coat color is a process of trial and error.

Instructions

1. Pour water over the area that needs to be painted, and lightly wet-sand it with 320-grit sandpaper. Sand off only enough of the existing paint to remove sun damage.

2. Sand the surface with 400-, 500- or 600-grit sandpaper to smooth the surface of the repair area.

3. Buff the surface with a clean cloth to remove all moisture, dust and paint particles.

4. Pour acetone into the container of gel coat that came with the repair kit until the gel coat is the consistency of water.

5. Allow the container of gel coat to sit uncovered for several hours to allow some of the acetone to evaporate. Evaporation may take as long as overnight, depending on humidity.

6. Select the pigment from the repair kit that best matches the boat color that you want to achieve. For example, if the boat is red, select the nearest red pigment, even if the color is not a perfect match. Add 1/2 teaspoon of the pigment to the gel coat and stir with a small paint stirrer until well mixed.

7. Put on gloves and place the tip of your finger into the gel coat mixture. Wipe a thin layer of color onto the sanded area of the boat.

8. Examine the color carefully from directly in front of the repair area to determine what other pigments you should add. For example, if the color is too light, add more of the same pigment, or a small bit of black. If the color is too dark, add small amounts of white pigment until the color lightens sufficiently.

9. Continue adding and testing colors until you achieve the desired color.

10. Pour the prepared gel coat mixture into a paint gun and spray onto the entire surface of the repair area.

Send Money Anonymously Online

There is honor and humility in sending money anonymously, especially in the case of a charity. An anonymous payment signifies that you are doing what you can to help out of the pureness of your heart and your desire to help others rather than for recognition. It is also beneficial to donate anonymously to prevent your name and address from being added to mailing lists. You may also choose to send an online donation to an individual, such as a loved one in need who may be too embarrassed to ask for help.

Instructions

1. Establish an anonymous email account. You may need it to sign up for online accounts and services that will send the payment on your behalf. Use a generic name like "John Smith" or simply write "Anonymous Donor" as your sender name.

2. Send money online using a service like MoneyGram.com or WesternUnion.com. Choose a location in the recipient's town and use a credit card to process the transaction. Send an anonymous email to the recipient with the money retrieval password and instructions for where he can retrieve the cash. Identify the specific reason why you are sending the money and yourself as an "anonymous concerned party" so that the person can be assured that this is not some type of scam.

3. Establish a business or premier PayPal account. Paypal allows you to register for an account with a fictitious name or nickname (though your full name is preferred). Add your anonymous email account to the list of email addresses associated with the account. You can then send money to the recipient's email address from that anonymous address.

4. Visit JustGive.org to send an anonymous donation online. Make your payment and check the option to withhold your name and contact information from the charity. NetworkforGood.org and DonorsChoose.org, two more sites that support charities, also give you the option to donate anonymously or with a nickname.

Run A Fast Half Mile

Faster times for shorter distance running are within your reach. Take the time to focus your training once a week on speed. You have options that keep the workouts fun but effective. Challenge yourself to get your best time after using these techniques.

Instructions

1. Run the Swedish training program called fartleks. Increase your running speed for different amounts of time during your training runs once a week. Decide for yourself how long each of these speed increases lasts on your fartleks.

2. Train well when you practice your runs. Training with slower, longer distances doesn't necessarily mean that shorter runs are easier for you to finish quickly. Keep your focus on speed work.

3. Work on your speed form. Practice staying relaxed during your runs and using your running power without wasting energy.

4. Better your stride for faster runs after your regular workouts and stretching. Start running and steadily increase your speed for a distance of about 70 m. Slow to a jog for 1 or 2 minutes, then speed up again. Repeat this exercise up to five times.

5. Work on your speed form at a track. Run a comfortable but fast pace for 200 m, or half the distance of a standard running track. Slow down to a jog for 2 to 4 minutes between the fast runs. Repeat this six to eight times each training session.

Raise Money

Trying to raise money can be very difficult in a poor economy, but there are always people willing to be charitable. You just have to find them, and become their charity of choice.

Instructions

1. To raise money for your cause, start with a web site that tells the world what you're all about. It doesn't have to be high tech, but it should include your purpose, pictures, contact information, and most importantly, a way to contribute online. It's very simple to set up a paypal account to receive payments.

2. Advertise your site as much as possible. Put it on social networking sites such as Facebook. Twitter updates regarding the site, such as thanking generous donors. Get your friends and family on board to spread the word.

3. Enlist volunteers. If you find people to support your cause, you can ask them to help you by moderating the web site, answering phones, and a host of other clerical duties. One person cannot run a successful organization. Many people are willing to volunteer for a movement they think is worthwhile, and those people can make calls, create flyers, and send out mailers.

4. Another way to raise money is to host fundraisers a few times a year. They can be as simple as a local car wash, or as elaborate as a catered casino night. These can very expensive, but don't be afraid to ask local businesses to donate goods and services for use during the fundraiser. This is another time that volunteers would be very beneficial.

5. Look for the unexpected donor. If you trying to raise money to keep the beach clean, hit up local businesses who may benefit from the clean-up. Always think about who is benefiting from your cause, even indirectly. Those are the people who may be interested in donating.

6. Send out informative mailers. Even if you don't receive donations, you are still getting your name out there and people will remember you over time. It may take a dozen mailings to reach a home before a donation comes your way. The constant reminder will keep your cause on their minds.

Run A Marathon Race

1. 2

3. 4

5.

Instructions

Sign Up for a Race

You've stretched, you've hydrated, you've carbo-loaded... now what? With thoughts of glory consuming your mind, you have to make sure there's actually a race being offered in your area.

Remember:

* Most sponsoring organizations will allow you to register up to the morning of the race (with a bit higher of a registration fee), but we recommend signing up well in advance, just to be on the safe side.

* For the larger and more popular races, like the New York City Marathon, you'll have to register a few weeks or months in advance. Not everyone who applies even gets to run: Since so many people are interested, they have to use a lottery system to choose the participants.

And off you go! There are some important points to remember as you're running:

At least a week before the marathon, really ease up on your training schedule (say, three miles every other day). You don't want to burn yourself out before the race begins.

If you're not feeling well, don't run. You'll get other chances.

Bring water with you, and drink as much of it as you can during the run.

* After the big day, congratulate yourself on your hard work. In fact, make sure your friends congratulate you, too. You may even want to wear your medal out to a bar. On second thought, that would be pretty lame.

* Rest for a week after the run. Don't begin your rest on the day of the run, however; you'll need to keep on your feet and walk around to avoid some serious soreness.

* After you've recuperated, feel free to begin training for your next race. You'll feel better in the long run (pun most definitely intended).

Plan Games For A New Year'S Eve Party

Party games for all ages

A New Year's Eve party can be one of the biggest social events of the year. If you want to plan the perfect games for your night, keep in mind that your guests will want to have a great time, count down the new year and mingle with new people in a comfortable environment.

Instructions

Plan a Young People's New Year's Eve Party

1. Give children the option to stay up to see the "Ball Drop" on television. Instruct the children to bring sleeping bags and pillows so that they can go to sleep after the New Year arrives.

2. Play the resolution game. Ask each child to set a goal for the year (learn to ride a bike, earn an A in math, etc.) and to draw a picture of his goal.

3. See which child can make the most words out of the letters in the phrase "Happy New Year." The winner gets a prize!

Plan an Adult New Year's Eve Party

4. Arrange a belly dancing competition for the male guests, to be judged by the female guests. Provide accessories each man can use to enhance his performance, including castanets, silk sarongs, veils and Arabian music.

5. Challenge your guests' creativity with the "Park Bench" game. Place two chairs in the center of the room and have one guest sit in each. The object is to get the other person to move off the park bench without touching him. This can be accomplished through an action, a statement or other creative methods, but the time limit is 1 minute.

6. Play an old standard game with a drinking twist. For example, "Twister" is a popular game that can be combined with a drinking challenge. Each time you fall, for instance, you have to take a drink, or each time "red" is called, everyone has to drink. Hasbro has a ton of new versions of old-school classic board games that can be used (see Resources below).

Prevent Muscle Breakdown In Bodybuilding

To get in competition condition you need to preserve as much muscle as possible.

Losing muscle is any bodybuilder's worst nightmare. Muscle breaks down naturally during a workout, then grows bigger and stronger as scar tissue forms over the microscopic tears, so some muscle breakdown is needed to get bigger and stronger. Prolonged muscle breakdown leads to muscle loss, though. During a gaining or bulking phase, when you're building muscle and eating more calories, losing muscle won't be an issue. When you're looking to lose fat, you need to do everything in your power to retain mass and prevent long-term muscle breakdown.

Instructions

1. Control your calorie intake. To lose fat you need a calorie deficit, which means consuming fewer calories than you burn. However, the severity of your calorie deficit will determine how much muscle you retain or lose, writes nutritional scientist and bodybuilder Dr. Layne Norton on SimplyShredded.com. Diets with calorie deficits of over 1,000 per day will lead to muscle loss in the long-term, so diet slowly and aim to lose 1 to 1.5 pounds a week at most, adds Norton.

2. Increase your protein intake. Maintaining muscle mass is all about managing your protein turnover, which is the speed at which your muscles break down and rebuild, according to sports nutritionist Dr. John Berardi. An increased protein to carbohydrate ratio leads to a greater protein turnover rate and less muscle loss, as well as aiding with fat loss and increased production of muscle-building hormones. Aim for around 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight from foods like chicken, salmon, tuna, lean red meat, eggs, low-fat cheese and milk, soy and beans.

3. Decrease the number of reps you perform in your training sessions. While the common notion is to lift lighter weights for high-rep sets (15 to 20) to lose fat, this can actually result in muscle loss, writes Christian Thibaudeau in "Theory and Application of Modern Strength and Power Methods." By lowering the reps but increasing the weight, you force your body to hold on to muscle mass and reduce the breakdown caused by extended sets. For compound moves like deadlifts, squats and presses, perform sets of four to six reps. For isolation exercises like dumbell curls and crunches, perform sets of six to 10.

Sew Your Own Bib Overalls

Shortalls totally rock.

Overalls aren't just for farmers, country bumpkins or toddlers. They are part of mainstream fashion, not just in denim, but in bright colors and floral prints. The bib top is not only seen with pants like traditional overalls, but also on shorts, mini skirts and maxi skirts. The overall look is classic and comfortable. It's easy to transform a pair of jeans into a cute pair of bib overall shorts.

Instructions

Getting Started

1. Lay your jeans flat on a table and cut off the waistband. Be sure to cut very close to but not through the seam line. Set aside. You can use this waistband on another project.

2. Cut off the legs of your jeans a couple of inches below the crotch. Use your ruler so you have an even length. Draw a line with your chalk. The length is up to you. If you want "Daisy Duke" cutoff-style bib overalls, then cut off the legs at the crotch. If you like a longer short length with a finished look, cut the legs to the length you'd like. Add a ½ inch to turn the hem under and stitch for a clean look. Keep in mind you will need the lower part of the legs for the bib top and straps.

3. Stitch your hems with two rows of stitches like on traditional jeans.

Finish the hem on the shorts. Fold the leg hems up ¼ inch then fold over again and stitch down.

4. Measure with your measuring tape across your chest for the width of your bib. Measure from where you want the top of your bib to be to where you want it to join your shorts. This will be the size block you will cut for your bib.

5. Measure from where the back waistband of your shorts will sit to the middle of your shoulder blades. This will be the center back strap of your overalls. Measure over your shoulder from where you want the top edge of your bib to be to the middle of your shoulder blades. This is the measurement you will use to make your shoulder straps. Be sure to add a ½ inch to all measurements for turning the edges for a finished hem.

Making the Bib Front, Center Back Strip and Bib Pocket

6. Lay the right pant leg flat in front of you. You will be marking and cutting out the bib, center back band and bib pocket from this leg. Use the inside seam and the lower hem as a guide to measure your bib. Measure and mark the full length of the bib but only half the width since the jeans are folded in half, the inseam will be in the middle of your bib.

7. Use the top line of the bib piece as a guide and measure up from that line the length of your center back strap.

8. Decide how big you'd like the pocket on the front of your bib to be. Use the hem of your jeans and the line of the side of your bib as the top and sides of the pocket. Draw a square for a square pocket. If you'd like it to look more like a jean pocket, slightly angle the bottom edge. Keep in the mind the top edge is the finished hem of your jeans.

9. Cut out the bib, pocket and back strap pieces. Unfold the bib and pocket pieces and lay flat on the table. Cut the back strap piece in half on the inside leg seam.

10. Fold the edges of the bib, pocket and back strap in ¼ inch, then over again and stitch the finished hems down. Center the pocket on the front of your bib and stitch down leaving the top open.

Making the Waistband and Shoulder Straps

11. Lay the left pant leg flat in front of you. Measure from the inside seam to the middle of the jean leg and draw a line from the lower hem to the top edge. Be sure the line is straight with the inside seam. Cut the jeans apart on this center line through, the jean leg will be in two pieces. The piece with the inside seam is your waistband, set aside.

12. Remove the outside seam from the other half. You now have two strips that are your shoulder straps. Fold over all edges ¼ inch, fold over again and stitch down. Make the button holes on the end of each strap by drawing a line a little smaller than your button 1 inch from the end of each strap. Zigzag stitch around each hole.

13. Lay the back strap flat on the table. Align the shoulder straps with the top edge of the back strap so you create a Y shape. The shoulder straps need to be sewn on at an angle to be able to go over your shoulders and join the bib. Once you're happy with your positioning pin the two shoulder straps together where they and sew together You'll be sewing on an angle and your stitching should make a triangle between the two straps.

With right sides together pin the shoulder straps to the top edge of the back strap and sew together.

14. Unfold the waistband piece, and re-fold in half the long way, right sides facing and sew the ends together. Poke on hole on each side of the center seam. You will be feeding the waistband tie through these holes. Fold the waistband in half on what was the jean leg inside seam.

15. Sew the open end of this fabric waistband together using the presser foot as a guide. Pin the side of the waistband you just stitched to the top of the shorts, right sides facing and sew together. Double stitch for durability.

Joining the Top to the Bottom

16. Lay your shorts face up and align the middle of your bib to the middle of the front of your shorts. Pin the bottom edge of the bib to the top edge of the shorts and stitch together.

17.Flip the shorts over and align bottom edge of the back strap to the center of the top edge of the shorts. Pin together and sew.

18. Hand sew a button in the top corners of the bib.

19. Attach a safety pin to one end of the string, poke it through one of the waist band holes, feed it through the waist band and out the other hole. Knot the ends of the string.

20. Step into your overalls shorts, button the straps to the bib, tighten and tie the string in your waistband and head out to play.

3. Place your photo, apple die cut and a scrapbook pocket on the page meant to hold mementos, such as ticket stubs or postcards. Arrange these elements on the page in a pleasing design and affix them with glue or double-sided tape.

4. Embellish the front of the pocket with NYC-themed stickers.

City Streets Layout

5. Print a copy of the New York City skyline, adjusted to about half the height of your page and the entire width. For example, on a 12-by-12-inch page, your skyline would be six inches high and 12 inches wide. Cut out the skyline as a template.

6. Lay the template on a sheet of light gray paper. Trace it and cut it out.

7. Cover the top third of a sheet of black card stock with sky-blue paper. Place the skyline strip across the card stock with the buildings overlapping the blue. Affix the arrangement with adhesive.

8. Affix an airplane sticker on the top corner of the page above the skyline. Print the title of the layout on a narrow strip of paper and affix the banner behind the plane. Draw two lines from the corners of the title to the back of the plane, as though the plane is toting the banner.

9. Use taxi and car stickers or die cuts across the bottom black strip of the page. Journal photo details, such as dates and names, on the taxi cabs.

Broadway

10. Use black card stock for the background. Line the four edges of the paper with rhinestones or shiny round stickers to represent the lights on Broadway.

11. Mount your photos on neon paper and arrange them on the page.

12. Photocopy and print theater programs, autographs or ticket stubs. Cut out and arrange the copies on the page and affix them.

13. Journal directly on the page or write the names of the shows you saw using opaque markers in neon colors.

Central Park

14. Make a city skyline shape on a gray strip of paper. Glue it near the top of a sheet of sky-blue card stock.

15. Affix a sheet of green card stock to cover the bottom two-thirds of the page, overlapping the bottom of the skyline strip. Affix a row of tree die cuts across the top of the green sheet.

16. Mount your images on the field of green. Make frames for your images with small street-sign stickers. Overlap them slightly so they completely cover the edges of the photos.

17.Journal your memories on the gray strip of skyline.

Run After Quitting Smoking

Running is one of the best ways to exercise after you have quit smoking.

Running can be a great motivator after you quit smoking. Running can help reduce some of smoking's big risks: heart and lung disease, cancer and stroke. It also can help you avoid gaining weight, a common problem for former smokers. Always get your doctor's approval before starting a running program after quitting smoking.

Instructions

1. Begin your routine by walking comfortably.

Begin by walking for 4 minutes at a comfortable pace. This warms up your body.

2. Jog for 8 to 10 minutes at a comfortable speed. As a former smoker, you initially might cough a lot during this exercise. The main idea is to build endurance and keep going.

3. Your goal should be to develop endurance rather than speed.

Increase your speed from a jogging pace and run for 10 to 15 minutes. You can take a break for a minute or two after the jog and before you start running. They key idea is to run for a longer time rather than building speed. Run at a comfortable speed.

4. Drink lots of water before, during and after the run. This keeps your body hydrated.

5. Increase your running duration every week.

Run Splits On The Track

Improve your race times by running splits on a track.

When training to improve your race times, running splits on the track offers great benefits. Track running offers precisely-measured distances so you can accurately measure your pace. Most experts recommend that advanced runners use negative splits, meaning you run the second half of the race faster than the first. Beginning and intermediate runners, however, can aim for keeping a constant pace. Practicing splits during your training runs prepares you mentally and physically for race day.

Instructions

1. Direct your computer browser to an online split calculator, such as coolrunning.com.

2. Enter the length of your run, desired time and split distance. The inside lane of most tracks measures 400 meters, so this is an ideal split distance. Click on "calculate" or "enter" to get a list of your split times.

3. Go to the track. Start your stopwatch and start running. Run your desired distance, checking your stop watch at the end of each lap. If you find yourself falling behind, pick up the pace a bit. Conversely, slow down a bit if you are running too fast.

Recover From Heartbreak

Getting over heartbreak takes a proactive approach.

Relationships are complex and require effort to be successful. When your relationship ends, you may feel hurt, confused and angry. Getting over someone you felt close to can be difficult, and even more so if you did not instigate the breakup. It is important to allow yourself time to grieve for the relationship, and you will normally experience a series of emotions: denial, guilt, anger, and acceptance are just a few of the stages of grief you will undergo. You can help speed up the process of getting over heartbreak by taking control of the situation, rather than allowing the situation to control you.

Instructions

Grieve

1. Cut off all contact with your ex. Resist the urge to stay friends, even if your ex suggests it. If you maintain contact with your ex, it will draw out the grieving process and create a stressful and unhealthy situation for you both.

2. Allow yourself a certain amount of time to grieve. It is normal for you to reminisce about the good times you and your ex enjoyed. Permit yourself to feel angry, scared, lonely or whatever feelings arise after the breakup. According to Revolution Health, everyone processes grief differently, and therefore the time it takes for each person is different.

3. Take inventory of the relationship. Make an honest assessment of what worked and what didn't work. Relationships are two-way streets, so do not put all the blame on one person. Recognize your weaknesses and work to improve those.

4. Let go. After you've completed the grieving process, realize that it is time to truly let go of the relationship. Tell yourself it is OK to free yourself from the relationship. You cannot move on or have a healthy relationship again until you truly free yourself from the desire to be with your former partner.

Stay Active

5. Get busy with activities. Do not stay home all the time as this will keep you from letting go and moving on. If you keep your mind occupied, you will have less time to dwell on your failed relationship.

6. Exercise. Exercising your mind and your body is a good mood lifter. Dr. Sudha Prathikanti, M.D, states that consistent physical activity can have the same effects as an antidepressant because your body releases a chemical called serotonin as a result of regular physical exertion.

7. Reconnect with old friends you may have lost contact with during your relationship. Getting back in touch with your old friends can give you a different perspective of your relationship, especially if they have a unique insight into your actions.

Recharge Your Batteries

8. Remove all physical reminders of your ex from your sight. You will dwell less on your ex without physical manifestations of the relationship to remind you.

9. Treat yourself to a massage. Touch is comforting, so allow yourself a ten minute chair massage at the mall, or schedule a day at the spa for a full treatment. Massage is a healthy way to relieve stress and recharge your batteries.

10. Eat a healthier diet. Foods that contain tryptophan and omega-3 fatty acids are natural mood lifters. Take vitamin supplements to ensure you get the appropriate amount of nutrients you need.

Pop Popcorn Without A Microwave

Popcorn was a favorite snack in America long before it became a standard movie theater treat or came packaged in microwaveable bags. It starts as golden kernels, which pop into fluffy white balls when heated. Some people prefer the taste of "original" popcorn, without the artificial ingredients, cooked the old-fashioned way: right over the stove. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions

1. Pour the measured oil into the bottom of the pot.

2. Measure out the popcorn kernels and pour them into the pot. Cover the pot with the lid and put it on the stove over medium or medium-high heat.

3. Hover around the pot to listen to the popping sounds, which should begin in a few minutes. Take the handle of the pot and shake it occasionally so that the popcorn doesn't stick and burn, and each kernel is heated evenly.

4. Listen for when there are three to five seconds between popcorn pops. If you're making a lot of popcorn, you may also notice the popcorn actually pushing the lid off the pot. Immediately turn off the heat and put the pot on an unused burner to cool off for a minute or two.

5. Take off the lid and add your choice of seasoning. Add salt, pepper or even chili powder to give the popcorn some zesty flavor. Place the lid back on and shake it. Remove the lid and pour the popcorn into a big bowl so you can enjoy it. Drizzle melted butter over the popcorn, if you desire.

Practice Deepwater Running

Water workouts are a great addition to a running program. They're useful for rehabilitation from injury, for the fit runner who wants to intensify fitness, or for the beginner, who may need to ease into running on land.

Instructions

1. Buy a flotation device. A belt is most helpful, and can be purchased through swimming-gear distributors or in specialty or sporting-goods stores.

2. Start by standing in shallow water and swinging your arms in a running motion. High-step with your feet, moving your way down to deeper water until your feet can no longer touch the bottom.

3. Start by running for 5 minutes. Water running is very tiring, so take it easy in increasing your time. Experienced athletes can eventually go up to 45 minutes.

4. Add variety, such as intervals (quicker-paced segments interspersed with your normal running). Remember to warm up with easy water running first.

5. Try leg scissors. Put your back against the pool wall and extend your arms to hold onto the sides. Move your legs out to your sides as if you were in a jumping-jack position, with straight knees. Pull both legs together and cross your ankles. Go back to legs to your sides and repeat, alternating the foot that crosses in front.

6. Try leg crossovers. Take the same position as above. Extend your legs straight under you, toward the bottom of the pool. Pull your right leg across your body, with your knee straight, reaching as far as possible toward your left hand. Return to the starting position and switch legs.

7. Strengthen abdominals by back floating, then bringing your body into a "V" position. Straighten out and repeat.

8. Stretch after, as well as before, your workout. You can do this in the water or on land.

Reverse The Effects Of Smoking

We all know that smoking is hazardous to our health. We all know that quitting smoking is one of the best ways to help stop the effects smoking, but there are other things that can be done to help your body recuperate and reverse the effects that smoking has had on it. Exercise is one of the best ways to do this. Exercise strengthens the cardiovascular and respiratory system, and this in turn will decrease the effects that smoking has had on it.

Instructions

1. Join a gym or exercise group. It is a proven fact that people are more likely to succeed with an exercise program if they have group motivation.

2. Enlist the help of a personal trainer. A personal trainer will help to develop a specific exercise program designed just for you and what you want to accomplish.

3. Visit a nutritionist and work with her to develop a menu that will help promote your new lifestyle. There are foods that you can eat that will help reduce the free radicals in you body that have been put there by smoking. The nutritionist can suggest foods that are to your liking and that are affordable and nutritious.

4. Begin each morning with a series of deep breathing exercises. These exercises will help strengthen the lung muscles, expand lung volume and help with endurance. To do the exercises, take as deep a breath as you can and hold it for a count of ten. You may find that at first you will spend as much time coughing as you do breathing, but this will decrease as you continue your program. Take at least ten deep breaths, pausing in between so as not to cause yourself dizziness. You may increase the number of breaths as you feel comfortable doing so.

5. Follow your personal trainers guidelines as you exercise. He will be able to show you exercise both effectively and safely. You may find it will be hard to resist the urge to quit, but you will also find that if you continue, you will reap great benefits.

6. Remember these facts as you continue your regimen to reverse the effects that smoking has had on your health. After three months, your lung function and circulation will begin to improve. After nine months, your lung function may have improved as much as fifty percent, especially if you have followed a rigorous exercise program. After one year, your risk of heart disease will only be about fifty percent of what it was when you smoked.

Run With Your Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is a common problem that afflicts runners. It involves the inflammation of the plantar fascia ligament that runs along the bottom of the foot. Inflammation occurs when the tissue develops small tears. The pain is usually most severe in the morning when you get up, or when you try walking after sitting for an extended period. Rest and stretching are the two most important things to do if you are suffering from plantar fasciitis. Be patient and give your foot time to heal.

Instructions

1. Reduce your running schedule. A reduction of 25 percent to 75 percent in your running schedule is suggested by the Road Runners Club of America. If the pain persists, avoid running altogether until the injury has had time to heal. Substitute less-stressful exercises into your workout routine.

2. Add stretching and flexibility exercises to your routine. Stretching helps to strengthen the muscles. Stretching the Achilles tendon helps to relieve pressure on the plantar fascia ligament.

Place your hands in front of you against a wall. Lean into the wall, bending one leg and keeping the other leg straight. You will feel the stretch in the heel of the straight leg. Hold this position for 10 seconds.

Bend the straight leg sideways putting pressure on the ankle. Hold this position for 10 seconds. Repeat the exercise five to 10 times. Sit down on a firm chair. Lift your foot upwards while keeping your toes on the floor. Place all your pressure on your toes. You will feel the stretch in your calf and heel. Hold the position for 10 seconds. Release and repeat five to 10 times.

3. Take anti-inflammatory medications, such as ibuprofen or naproxen, to help reduce the inflammation and ease the pain. Ice the bottom of the foot after running. This helps with the inflammation as well.

4. Massage your foot. Place a plastic water bottle or tennis ball under your foot. Place your foot on the bottle or ball and roll it back and forth for several minutes.

Another technique is to places marbles and pebbles on the floor. Pick the pebbles or marbles up with your toes and place them in a cup.

5. Buy new running shoes. Go to a sports store and describe your problem. Ask employees to evaluate your stride and running technique. Buy a pair of running shoes that fits your foot and provides firm support for your heel.

Protect A Dog From Eye Injury

Dogs can have many problems with their eyes. Cornea damage is the most common eye problem that results from injury. If your dog has damaged his cornea, his eye turns red and you may see him pawing at his eye or rubbing his eye against the floor, furniture or people. If your dog has cornea damage, take him to the vet.

Instructions

1. Keep your dog on a leash when outside unless you are in a fenced area that is clear of debris, brush and shrubs. The most common cause of eye injury in dogs is scratches, cuts and punctures to the cornea caused by running through branches and brush.

2. Put your car windows down for the dog while driving, but not far enough that she can get her head out. Although many dogs love to ride with the wind in their faces, pieces of debris can strike them in the eye, causing cornea damage. The debris could even get lodged in the dog's eye.

3. Take the dog out of the yard whenever you are spraying chemicals. Leave her inside the house for a couple of hours after spraying plants in the garden or yard. Likewise, take her out of the house when spraying chemicals inside to protect her eyes.

4. Clean your dog's face with a warm, wet washcloth when bathing her. Do not use shampoo on your dog's head and face to avoid getting the shampoo in her eyes. Wash your dog's face and eye area in between baths as well, using warm water, to keep her eyes clean.

5. Check your dog's eyes on a regular basis for signs of infection or injury. If you see a foreign body in your dog's eye, wet a piece of gauze with warm water and gently hold it over the eye to try to flush out the debris. Do not push down or wipe the eye, as you could move the debris around and cause further damage. After dislodging the debris or any time you see signs of eye injury with your dog, take the dog to the vet as soon as possible.

Sell A Bulova Watch

When selling a Bulova watch, it may take a while before the right buyer is found.

Bulova watches remain classic timepieces. In 1960, the first electronic watch entered the market, manufactured and engineered by Bulova. Watches by Bulova are both fashion accessories and collectors items depending on the age and style of the watch. When selling a Bulova watch, attention to the watch's details, age, condition and rarity should be taken in to consideration. In order to sell your Bulova, you should first make an assessment of what it is truly worth and then begin the sales process from there. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Get an appraisal for your watch to reflect its current condition and value. Have this done by a jeweler who is accredited by the American Gem Society. Get a written copy of the appraisal supplied by the jeweler and make copies to pass along to the buyer once the watch is sold. Ensure that the appraisal is in line with your expectations by comparing the appraised value to the amount originally paid for the watch. If the estimate is too low, have the Bulova watch appraised by a second jeweler.

2. Have the watch cleaned and repaired if necessary. Use the jeweler that appraised the watch and ask for a discount for more than one service. Ask the jeweler if the cleaning will increase the value of the watch. If so, have the jeweler provide you with an amended appraisal based on the condition of the Bulova watch after cleaning and repairs have been completed.

3. Take digital photos of the watch. Do this after having the watch cleaned so it is in its best condition. Use the highest resolution setting on your camera and take pictures from various angles. Place the watch on a white or black piece of cloth so that watch details show up. Make sure to take close-up shots of the front and back of the watch and get a good picture of the Bulova name on the face of the watch.

4. Write the advertisement for the watch. Include information such as the year the watch was manufactured, the material the watch is made of, any flaws or conditions potential buyers should be made aware of and the appraised value of the Bulova watch. Use the brand name Bulova in the title of the ad and throughout the body of the text.

5. List the watch for sale at online auction sites, local newspapers and classified sections in local and regional magazines. Take the watch to local and regional jewelery stores, antiques dealers and pawn shops. With the appraisal documentation in hand you will know whether or not prices offered to you are reasonable.

6. Keep the watch in the box it originally came in with all relevant paperwork; both provided by Bulova. Keep in a cool and dry location. Obtain a replacement box if you cannot locate the original packaging. Do not allow others to play with or handle the watch while you are in the process of selling it.
