Repair A Schwinn Bicycle Hub

A damaged hub can cause your bike to shake.

The hub of a Schwinn bicycle can become worn or damaged from long-term use or rough riding. This is the part of the bike that connects the back wheel to the frame. It is susceptible to damage from bearing too much weight or receiving a pounding from a rough surface. Often, you can simply repair the hub rather than replace the entire device. This can save you time and money. A properly cared for hub will give you a smooth ride and prevent uneven wear on the tires. Repairing a Schwinn hub is like repairing the hub of any bicycle.

Instructions

1. Detach the hub from the frame and wheel of the bike. Loosen and remove the axle nuts by turning them counterclockwise with an adjustable wrench. Pull the cogs from the hub with a pair of pliers.

2. Remove the locknut from the bolt of the hub. Hold the cone on the hub in place and prevent it from turning with a cone wrench. The cone is located next to the locknut. Loosen and remove the locknut by turning it counterclockwise with an adjustable wrench while holding the cone in place.

3. Lift the wheel of the bike upward while holding your hand under the hub to catch the bearings as they fall from the hub. The bearings will fall from the area where the hub touches the wheel.

4. Remove any remaining bearings with a magnet. Hold the magnet close to the area containing the bearings and allow the magnet to attract the bearings that remain in the hub.

5. Examine the bearings. Replace any bearings that are not shiny and smooth.

6. Clean the entire hub assembly with a damp rag. Remove any grease, dirt, debris or other buildup by wiping the surfaces with the rag.

7. Test the axle of the hub. This is the long piece that looks like a threaded bolt. Roll the axle on a smooth, flat surface. Monitor how it rolls. If any space appears between the axle and the surface, the axle is bent. Replace the axle.

8. Reassemble the hub by reversing all the steps you took to take apart the hub. Use the new replacement pieces for any worn bearings or a bent axle.
