Reduce Weight Gain During Pregnancy

Denise Thuler

Nowadays, doctors suggest women gain between 25 and 35 pounds during their pregnancy. Women who are underweight may gain up to 45 pounds, while women who are overweight may gain as little as 15 to 25 pounds. These guidelines are considered healthy, so follow these steps to maintain a healthy weight gain.

Instructions

Reducing weight gain

1. Discuss with your obstetrician what your ideal amount of weight gain should be throughout the pregnancy. You also should discuss your exercise options. If you were active pre-pregnancy, then you most likely will be able to remain active during your pregnancy. Typically, doctors tend not to suggest that inactive women become active during their pregnancy.

2. Meet with a nutritionist. Your doctor should be able to give you a referral. The nutritionist will discuss healthy eating and the foods you should eat and avoid while pregnant.

3. Set up a meal plan. The nutritionist may have given you one, but pregnant women tend to eat what they are craving, so there will be some wiggle room. Take this meal plan to the grocery store and purchase the necessary foods.

4. Engage in movement to help reduce weight gain during pregnancy. As previously stated, this does not mean beginning an exercise program. This means getting up and moving around. Walk as much as you comfortably can. Even a small amount of movement will help reduce weight gain.

5. Drink water. It is important to stay hydrated, so remember to replenish fluids throughout the day.
