Measure Your Body Fat Composition

Use a calculator to determine your body fat composition.

Body fat composition -- or body mass index (BMI) -- is a measurement of the amount of fat on the body. According to MayoClinic.com, an individual is considered obese once the body fat composition score is 30 or above. A BMI of 40 or above is considered morbidly obese. Both obesity and morbid obesity carry serious health consequences, such as heart disease, hypertension and diabetes. If your BMI is under 18, you are considered underweight. A body mass score between 18.5 and 25 is considered average.

Instructions

Formula for Women

1. Step on the scale and record your total weight. Multiply your total weight by 0.732 and add 8.987. Record the answer as Factor 1.

2. Measure the circumference of your wrist with the tape measure. Divide this number by 3.140. Record this number as Factor 2.

3. Measure the circumference of your waist at the navel. Multiply this number by 0.157. Record the number as Factor 3.

4. Measure the circumference of your hips and multiply the number by .249. Record the number as Factor 4.

5. Measure the circumference of the forearm and multiply the number by 0.434. Record this number as Factor 5.

6. Add Factor 1 to Factor 2. Subtract Factor 3 from the total. Next, subtract Factor 4 from the new total. Finally, add Factor 5 to the new total to find the lean body mass index.

7. Subtract the lean body mass index from the total body weight recorded in Step 1. This figure is the body fat weight.

8. Multiply body fat weight by 100. Divide this number by the total body weight recorded in Step 1. This number is the body fat percentage.

Formula for Men

9. Step on a scale and record your total body weight. Multiply this number by 1.082. Add 94.42 to the total. Record this number as Factor 1.

10. Measure your waist at the navel and multiply this number by 4.15. Record this number as Factor 2.

11. Subtract Factor 1 from Factor 2 to find your lean body mass index.

12. Subtract lean body mass from the total body weight recorded in Step 1. The total is the body fat weight.

13. Multiply body fat weight by 100. Divide this number by the total body weight recorded in Step 1. This number is the body fat percentage.
