Plan A Fundraiser Event

A car wash is a type of fundraiser that can involve children.

Planning a fundraiser is a rewarding way to become involved in a specific cause within your community or at a larger level. Planning a fundraising event requires some creativity and the ability to develop and accomplish goals. Making a plan and sticking with it will ensure your fundraiser is successful.

Instructions

1. Decide what cause or organization you want to raise money for. Think about organizations that you are particularly passionate about. Organizations exist at the local, regional and national levels, so you are bound to find a cause you would like to donate to.

2. Contact the local or national branch of the chosen organization, if possible. Doing so will help you develop fundraising ideas and guide your plans. Many organizations have specific guidelines for planning events.

3. Decide what type of fundraiser you would like to host. A variety of fun options exist: consider selling candy bars, hosting a casino night, planning a festival, selling raffle tickets, holding a car wash, planning an auction or holding a dinner. Keep in mind that the organization you have selected may have rules regarding what type of fundraisers are appropriate. Also, note that some fundraisers will cost more to host than others. An auction, dinner or casino night will cost more than a car wash.

4. Choose a date for the fundraiser. Avoid national holidays or the dates of local conventions. Choose a date at least several months so that you have adequate time to plan the event.

5. Create your budget. Try to spend as little money as possible to ensure that you will make a profit. Some items to consider when making your budget are decorations, refreshments, and rental expenses. Also, decide what you will charge for the entrance fee or whether the amount will be by donation. Determine where you will collect the money. If you require financial assistance, share your needs with your community to gain financial support from local businesses or individuals.

6. Reserve a location to host the fundraising event. Don't choose a location without visiting the site in person. You will need to take photographs and determine how many people the venue can accommodate.

7. Gather volunteers to help you. Ask close friends and colleagues to help you at your fundraising event, and have them bring other interested individuals. Target people with skills that are relevant to your event -- they will be a valuable asset in the planning process. Be sure you ask far enough in advance so they have adequate time to prepare.

8. Let people know about your event. Social media is a great and inexpensive way to spread the word about your event. Also consider making flyers or brochures to post around the community on bulletin boards and in businesses.
