Play Arena Football

If you enjoy playing football, you might want to consider arena football. The version is similar to the established game, with differences designed to make it higher scoring. The field is about half the size of a regular football field and fewer players are used. Arena football was invented in 1981 by James E. Foster, a fan who got the idea while watching an indoor soccer game. The first arena football game was played in 1986. A year later, the Arena Football League (AFL) started. If you weren't good enough to play in the NFL, the AFL became an option to continue your career.

Instructions

1. Know the rules. Many are similar to the NFL; a touchdown is worth six points and three timeouts are allowed per half. Some rules, however, are different. In the AFL, a field goal by a drop kick is worth four points and a team starts eight players and has a roster of 20 active players. In the NFL, teams get three points for a drop kick and start 11 players with active rosters of 45 players.

2. Have speed. While certain positions require size, there is an emphasis placed on quickness because of the shorter field. An arena football field is 28 yards wide and 50 yards long, while an NFL field is and 53 1/3 yards wide and 120 yards long.

3. Excel at quarterback and wide receiver. Unlike the NFL or college football, offenses primarily throw the ball instead of being balanced or run-dominated.

4. Find a game. Arena football isn't played on the organized youth, high school or college level. You'll have to find or start a pick-up game. Or, try out for the AFL.
