When a doctor induces labor, she will administer the drug Pitocin intravenously. If your labor will be induced, you typically have a time and a date for the induction scheduled with your doctor and will know when the labor will begin. Labor induction is relatively easy but can be intimidating if you are not prepared. By following a few simple steps you can prepare yourself for an easy and uncomplicated induction.
Instructions
1. Create a birth plan. Your birth plan should include whether or not you would like any pain medication, whom you would like to be in the delivery room, how you would like the baby handled after delivery, and whom you would like to cut the umbilical cord. By making copies of your birth plan for your doctor, nurses, and other hospital personnel, you will be able to help dictate the progression of your labor and be better prepared for the impending induction of labor. Free birth plans can be made online at birthplan.com.
2. Pack your hospital bag. If your labor will be induced, you know in advanced when you will be going into labor. In order to prepare for your labor induction and delivery, be sure to have your overnight bag for the hospital packed. Your overnight bag should include toiletries, receiving blankets, a going-home outfit for yourself and your newborn, a robe, undergarments, and any form of entertainment that you'd like to have while in labor. Labor can last for several hours after being induced and you may wish to watch movies or read while waiting to begin delivery.
3. Make arrangements for pets and other children. If you have other pets or children and are having your labor induced, make arrangements for them to stay with family and friends during the duration of your hospital stay. Most hospitals require that those who deliver vaginally remain in the hospital for at least 24 hours and those who deliver via Cesarean section remain in the hospital for at least 48 hours.
