If you plan to be in the city of Venice, Italy, set aside one day to visit the picturesque island of Burano. It takes about an hour and a half to get to the island, which has been described as "quiet and colorful."
Instructions
1. Board the LN (Laguna Nord) "motoscafo" at the Fondamenta Nove water bus stop located on the northern edge of the historic center of Venice. The Laguna Nord runs every 30 minutes for most of the day. You'll stop at Murano-Faro and Mazzorbo before arriving in Burano.
2. Visit the church of San Martino located in the Piazza Galuppi. Dating back to 16th century, the church boasts a leaning campanile (bell tower), which locals lovingly refer to as the "drunken" tower. You'll also see important works by famous 18th-century Venetian artists Palma the Younger and Giovanni Battista Tiepolo.
3. Explore the back alleys and side streets of Burano, and take in the views of the island's famously colorful houses. Residents must get their house colors approved by the government.
4. Visit the Dalla Lidia and the Museo del Merletto galleries in Burano's city center. You will find masterpieces of lace such as wedding dresses and parasols dating back to the 15th century.
5. Enjoy a traditional Italian seafood meal in one of the many restaurants in Burano such as Al Gatto Nero da Ruggero.
