Ride A Bike Without Training Wheels

Riding a bike without training wheels may not be as difficult as it seems. In fact, most can learn to ride in an afternoon.

Riding a bike without training wheels for the first time can be a frightening endeavor. Those used to riding with the assistance of two extra wheels often are not equipped with the knowledge and confidence required to learn to effectively steer and balance a two-wheeled bike. Fortunately, riders of any age can learn to ride without training wheels in an afternoon at the park, on a surface much softer than the sidewalk outside the house.

Instructions

1. Take your bike, without training wheels, to a nearby park with a long grassy hill on which to practice. Stand over the bike at the top of the hill. If you are a parent or guardian teaching a child to ride, wait at the bottom of the hill. That should make the child more comfortable riding down yet let him know he can ride on his own.

2. Hop up on the seat of the bike. Do not put your feet on the pedals. Instead, keep them extended in front of you. Walk the bike toward the incline until it begins to roll on its own. On your way down, use the brakes to moderate speed and your feet to keep yourself upright.

3. Ride down the hill a few times with your feet extended until you are comfortable with keeping the bike upright and modulating your speed. When your are ready, go back to the top of the hill, walk toward the incline and roll down, but this time put your feet on the pedals.

4. Practice riding down the hill with your feet on the pedals until you are comfortable. When you are ready, go back to the top of the hill and roll down again, this time pedaling slowly as you roll. Use the brakes to keep speed to a minimum.

5. Once you are comfortable pedaling slowly, move to a flat area. Hop up on the seat of the bike, put one foot on a pedal, push off the ground with the other foot and then pedal slowly around. If you feel as if you are about to fall, simply set a foot on the ground and push off again. Practice until you no longer feel as if the bike is trying to throw you off.
