Remove Duct Tape

Duct tape adhesive holds fast to many surfaces, making it an effective tool for taping things together. In a pinch, people often use duct tape to fix cracked or broken surfaces. Once the tape is no longer needed, removing it can become quite a task if the tape has been on the surface for a long time. To successfully remove duct tape, you must be able to take off the tape and the sticky residue it leaves behind. Proper supplies and techniques allow you to do this without damaging the surface. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Lift the edge of the duct tape from the surface with a plastic scraper. Insert the corner edge of the scraper underneath the tape, and lift to break the bond between the tape and surface. Grasp the tape and pull to remove as much as possible.

2. Pour a little vegetable oil onto a clean, dry cloth. Rub the remaining duct tape adhesive with the cloth. Allow the oil to sit on the tape adhesive for up to 10 minutes to break down the glue and loosen the bond.

3. Dampen another cloth with hot water and squeeze out any excess water. Lay the hot compress on the surface while the oil is still there. The heat and moisture work together with the oil to further soften the duct tape adhesive.

4. Remove the cloth and scrape up as much of the loosened tape adhesive as possible.

5. Aim a hair dryer at remaining duct tape glue to soften it. Pour a little nail polish remover onto a clean cloth, then wipe up the last traces of sticky adhesive. Clean the surface with all-purpose cleaner before drying it with a clean cloth.
