Prevent Heat Cramps

Heat cramps typically happen during or sometimes after an intense exercise session. They are identified by painful muscle contractions, typically in the arms. Heat cramps result from excessive sweating in cases where fluid and salt are not quickly replaced as they are lost. While heat cramps can be excruciating, they are not generally permanent or life threatening. Preventing heat cramps is simply a matter of following a few healthy guidelines.

Instructions

1. Stretch out your muscles. You can prevent heat cramps by stretching and massaging your muscles while they are stretched at full length.

2. Drink lots of fluids. Water will replenish the water you lose and help prevent heat cramps. A sports drink is also helpful to replace electrolytes and fluids that you have lost.

3. Eat foods high in potassium. Loss of potassium is another reason for heat cramps. You can replenish your potassium by loading up on fruits, like bananas.

4. Start slowly when working out in warmer environments than you are accustomed to and take a break if you start to get a headache.

5. Wear light colored clothes that are also light-weight, especially if you are exercising in a sunny location. Use any fans and air conditioners that are available to you.
