Reliance brand hot water heaters have two screw-in type elements on electric models. Gas hot water heaters have a burner at the base of the water tank. One heating element is located near the top of the tank and one near the bottom. When replacing elements, make sure you buy replacement parts that are rated at the same wattage and voltage as the failed element. Since the water heater will need to be drained to make these repairs, use caution to avoid coming into contact with 120 degree hot water. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Turn off power to the water heater by unplugging the device from the wall or tripping the breaker switch at the main electrical panel for the home. If possible, turn off power about two hours before making repairs to allow the water inside the tank to cool, reducing the possibility of getting scalded.
2. Close the cold water supply valve located just above the water heater. Open a nearby hot water tap to allow air into the tank as an aid to draining.
3. Attach a garden hose to the drain valve, located near the bottom of the water heater. Open the valve and let the tank drain completely.
4. Remove the two screws that hold each access cover in place. The covers are prominent, about 6 or 7 inches long and located on the front of the heater. Remove or pull back the insulation and take off the plastic cover installed over the elements.
5. Detach the two wires on each element by loosening the screws that hold them in place. Push the wires off to each side so you can access the element.
6. Remove the part using a water heater element wrench. This tool is available at hardware stores and home centers. The element is difficult to reach with traditional wrenches.
7. Slip a gasket over the new element and hand tighten it into place making sure not to cross thread. Finish tightening the part with the element wrench.
8. Close the water heater drain and open the cold water supply. Allow the tank to fill completely. When water begins to flow steadily from the open hot water tap, close it and check the elements for leakage. If leaks occur, try tightening the element a little more. If it still leaks, the gasket may need to be repositioned. Repeat Steps 2 and 3, reposition the gasket and tighten the element.
9. Re-connect the two wires to the element. Put on the plastic cover. Fold the insulation back into place and screw on the access panels.
