Repair A Watch Strap

If you keep your watch a long time, the strap will eventually need replacing.

People own a watch for a long time. Many other possessions, such as phones and MP3 players, get changed every year or so, but a watch can be with you for years. As a result, the strap may wear out or break and need replacing. You could take it to a repair shop to get it changed, but doing it yourself is easy. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Stick the fork end of the spring bar tool between the watch strap and the tiny arm that connects it to the watch face. A spring bar tool is like a screwdriver with a forked end. It is used for releasing the pin that holds each side of the watch strap in place. Your watch will have four little arms, two on either side of the watch. The strap sits on a thin, retractable pin that is poked into a small hole on the inside of the tiny arms.

2. Locate the pin and pull it in toward the middle of the strap. This should cause the pin to contract and pop out of place. The pin has little shoulders, which are gripped by the forked end of the tool. Gently pull the strap out of its place. Put the pin somewhere safe, because you'll need for your new strap.

3. Repeat this process on the opposite side to remove the strap. If you have not already bought a replacement strap, measure the space between the two arms that held the strap in place. Get a replacement with exactly the same measurement. Measure the length of the strap so you don't get one that's too long or too short for your wrist.

4. Clean any scum from the pinholes in the little arms. You can use a pinhead to do this. This part of your watch doesn't see the light of day very often, so it's a good idea to clean it while you have the chance.

5. Poke your old watch pin through the loop at the top of the watch strap. Put the end of the pin into the hole in either one of the little arms.

6. Use the spring bar tool to grip the other end of the pin. Insert it into the hole on the opposite side. You should hear it click into place. Give the watch strap a gentle tug to make sure it is securely in place. Repeat the process for the other half of the strap.
