Garbage bags are lightweight alternatives to rain jackets for runners.
Rain can be a negative factor when it comes to running. If you're on your regular training run, wearing a rain jacket is effective. However, when you're running a race, whether it's a 5K or a marathon, wearing a rain jacket can be uncomfortable and keep you from your best performance. If the weather is inconsistent, you may feel you need a rain jacket at certain parts of the run, but not others---but you don't want to carry the extra weight. This is why runners have resorted to running with garbage bags. They keep you dry, they're lightweight and, best of all, they can be thrown away at an aid station if need be.
Instructions
1. Take a garbage bag and turn it upside down, so that the sealed portion is at the top.
2. Cut an opening about 10--12 inches at what is now the top of the bag, measuring from the edge toward the middle. Use a ruler to help you.
3. Hold the garbage bag up to your body, placing it under your neck, and measure to about 2 inches below where your shoulders would be.
4. Cut an opening about 6 inches wide from where you made the measurement below your shoulders, and repeat on the other side.
5. Take the garbage bag and pull it over your head, allowing your head to poke through the first opening you made, and your arms to stick out from the two cuts on the sides.
