Measure A Walking Route

Measure your walking route to track your fitness.

Knowing exactly how far you have walked or will walk can be incentive to keep up your routine. Map your route one of two ways: Go for a walk, noting the route, then come back home and calculate it, or plan a route of a certain length before you leave. Either way, seeing your progress can help keep you motivated.

Instructions

1. Go old-school and use a printed map to figure the length of your route. Trace your route, measure it with a ruler and compare the length with the distance scale included on the map.

2. Walk your route with a distance-measuring pedometer. Set the pedometer to your stride length and make sure to keep an even stride while walking. Multiply the number of steps by the stride length to find the total length of your walk.

3. Use your car to measure your walking route. Set your trip meter to zero. If you don't have a trip meter, write down the beginning mileage reading. If you need to, subtract the beginning mileage from the end mileage. The difference is the distance of your walking route. If your walk takes you places you can't go in the car, use the pedometer method to measure it.
