Recycle Electronics For Cash Or Points

Reuse or recycle old technology.

As consumers are offered an endless stream of new technology, used electronics pile up. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, American households owned an average of 24 electronics in 2008, and we disposed of about 1.84 million tons of tech between 1980 and 2007. Our use of technology is likely to grow as years pass, so it's important for us to recycle old TVs, cell phones, and computers to save precious natural resources. We can also supply low-income families with access to technology by donating electronics. Recyclers and donators benefit directly by earning cash or tax incentives.

Instructions

1. Gather your gadgets and decide what can be fixed or given to loved ones. Pack up whatever can't be salvaged in a moving box.

2. Research recycling options in your area. Sites like Earth 911 and My Green Electronics allow users to search for recycling and donation centers in their zip codes.

3. Ask for documentation from charity centers if you're donating your technology. This can be used for tax return purposes.

4. Sell your used goods at local electronics retailers, pawn shops or consignment stores. Consult the internet or phone book for electronics resale shops near you.

5. Sell your electronics online. You could sell your items through sites like eBay and Craigslist, but you could also sell them directly to sites like BuyMyTronics, YouRenew, and Gazelle.

6. Return your electronics to their manufacturers for cash. Contact your products' manufacturers to learn about resale options.
