Prevent Dehydration During Physical Activity

Dehydration occurs when your body loses too much water and blood salts such as potassium and sodium. Your body will not be able to function at the optimal level. During physical activity, your body loses water through sweating and breathing. If you do not regularly supply your body with fluid during exercise, you will experience dehydration. Instructions


1. Drink plenty of fluids before, after and during a workout. Keep a bottle of water during workout and drink every 15 to 30 minutes. Start drinking not only when you are thirsty but also early in your workout. You only feel thirsty when your body already loses quite a lot of water.


2. Estimate how much you need to drink by weighing yourself before and after practice. Drink 2 cups of fluid for every pound lost during workout.


3. Check the color of your urine for the sign of dehydration. If your body is hydrated, the color of your urine should be pale lemonade. If it is dark gold, your body is probably dehydrated.


4. Drink sport drinks that contain 6 to 8% sugars and a small amount of sodium. Sodium helps the body to absorb and keep water. Do not worry that sport drinks contain too much sodium.
