Search for Tax ID Numbers for Businesses
Every business must have a federal tax ID number, also called an Employer Identification Number (EIN). Like a Social Security number for people, it identifies a company to the Internal Revenue Service for tax purposes. You can use one of several methods to find a company's tax ID number or your company's number if you have misplaced it. In most cases, you can receive the information at no charge.
Instructions
1. Search for your business EIN. You will find this number on the confirmation notice your received when the IRS issued your number. If you are unable to locate the notice, you can call the IRS's Business and Specialty Tax Line and ask an agent to help you search for your tax ID number. You can also have your bank check your records if your opened an account with this number.
2. Locate the EIN of a public company. Look through the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commissions EDGAR database for a company's SEC filings (see Resources). Public companies must list their tax ID numbers on documents such as their 10-Ks and 20-Fs.
3. Find a non-profit company's tax ID number. Non-profit companies usually include their EINs on Form 990, which they use to report their financial information and the names of their executives. You can find this form for the company you are interested through Guidestar (see Resources).
4. Check the company's website. According to Business.gov, some companies list their tax ID number on their website. You may be able to find it on the company's About Us page or on a press release page.
5. Search for a company's tax ID number through an EIN search website. These companies provide the service for a fee. Popular EIN search websites include Feinsearch.com, KnowX.com and Einfinder.com (see Resources).
