Open a Dixie League uniform shop in your town.
Founded in 1973, Dixie League Baseball was originally formed to provide a league for boys who had graduated from the small baseball diamond, but were not quite ready to play on the big league baseball diamond. Dixie came up with an intermediate diamond that allowed boys of ages 13 to 15 to play at a comfortable skill level. Since that time, Dixie baseball has grown to include both boys and girls from the ages of 6 to 19. If Dixie baseball is popular in your town, opening a sports themed uniform shop can provide the players with a place to get their uniforms year in and year out.
Instructions
1. Incorporate your business. This will allow you to keep a separate set of books which belong solely to the business and it protects your personal assets as well as the assets of the business. Incorporation laws and fees will vary from state to state.
2. Obtain a business license from your town, city, county or state. This will again vary by your location. The business license will require you to state things such as the name, type of business and owner of the business. In most states you will be considered a retail or retail sports business.
3. Find a location for your Dixie League baseball uniform shop. Think about the proximity of the nearest league. Try to stay away from other uniform shops that cater to other towns and find a location with a large enough league so that you will be providing services to boys and girls ages 6 through 19.
4. Order inventory for your Dixie League baseball uniform shop. Dixie does not enforce a comprehensive uniform policy other than that each player shall where a uniform which is like that of their teammates. However, Dixie League does sell items such as patches which can be sewn onto the uniforms. The patches help identify the player and team as part of Dixie League Baseball. Baseball caps, shirts, pins and bumper stickers are some of the other apparel officially sold by the Dixie League. Inquire about store merchandise discount since you are purchasing with the intent to resell.
5. Work with baseball uniform companies that offer group discounts. Uniforms can be ordered yearly or every few years by the local league depending on the type of uniform material, how many players are in the league and how much use the uniforms are getting. By establishing a business relationship with the uniform companies, you can serve as the liaison between the two. By handling the ordering of the uniforms you can add a small profit to the price of each uniform for your work.
6. Charge to personalize the Dixie League uniforms. Many baseball uniform shops make money by adding numbering and last names to the back of the baseball jerseys. If this uniform is only being worn by one person, then you can iron-on player's last names. If it is being worn for multiple years, then you will only be able to provide numbering services.
7. Sell other apparel needed to play Dixie League baseball. Gloves, batting gloves, cleats, bats, helmets and catching equipment are all "must-haves" for both the players and the Dixie baseball league. Become a one-stop shop for everything baseball and softball in your town. Then, as the season changes, you can offer apparel for other sports as well.
