See The New Orleans Easter Parade

New Orleans is home to several Easter parades that proceed through the city. The parades have staggered their start times throughout the day, meaning that virtually everyone in New Orleans can have a chance to see at least one of the events. Among the most well known of the Easter parades is the historic French Quarter parade that runs through the district in the morning. The Chris Owens Easter Parade, hosted by the local entrepreneur and entertainer, proceeds through the area in the early afternoon, followed by the New Orleans Gay Parade. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Choose which New Orleans Easter Parade you would like to see. The major parades' start times are spread out throughout the day, usually between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Plan on spending the entire day in the French Quarter if you want to catch a glimpse of all of them.

2. Obtain maps of the parade routes ahead of time. This way you can plan where you want to watch the parade and get there despite street closings. Several throughways in the historic district of New Orleans, including Canal, Bourbon and Decatur Streets are closed to traffic during the morning and afternoon hours of Easter Sunday.

3. Arrive at your parade-viewing destination at least an hour before the start time. Many people will line up on the parade route even earlier. Bring a lawn chair and sit comfortably if you can stake out your spot before the crowds hit.

4. Head to one of the larger landmarks in New Orleans where many parade watchers congregate. The Historic French Quarter Parade winds its way to Jackson Square and St. Louis Cathedral. The Chris Owens Easter Parade starts at the Astor Crown Plaza Hotel on Canal Street.

5. Dress appropriately for the weather, especially if you will be spending the whole day outside. Average temperatures in March and April can range from 65 to over 70 degrees F. Hydrate yourself with plenty of water if Easter temperatures are above average.

6. Participate in one of the New Orleans Easter parades instead of watching it from the sidelines. The Chris Owens parade has decorated floats you can enter. The smaller St. Charles parade features convertibles and carriages. See the behind-the-scenes workings of a parade by being a part of it.
