The process of reprogramming a garage door opener is the same as the initial programming process.
The process of reprogramming a garage door opener is the same as the steps you'd take to program it initially. In order to complete this task, you must have two things: access to the actual garage door opener (the unit installed on the ceiling of your garage) and a garage door transmitter, also called a remote. The act of reprogramming these two items is one in the same: in order to program one, you have to program the other. While the exact steps vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, the basic outline is similar. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Determine what type of garage door opener you have. The brand name should be visible on the sides of the unit.
2. Look up the corresponding brand name code in the owner's manual for your remote.
3. Program the remote or transmitter with the brand of the garage door opener. Depending on the type of remote, this is done either by flipping a series of switches on or off, or by using a numeric keypad on the transmitter. The remote is now programmed to search for the frequency emitted by the garage door opener.
4. Push the "Learn" button on the back of the garage door opener. The the garage door opener company Genie uses the word "Learn" for this button, but other manufacturers may use terms such as "Search," "Find" or "Program." Pressing this button causes the unit to search for any transmitters in the immediate vicinity; some overhead units start blinking once you push this button.
5. Press and hold the button on your remote within 30 seconds of pressing the "Learn" button on the opener until the light on the overhead unit stops blinking. For some models, you may need to press the button two or three times.
6. Test the remote to see if you programmed it correctly. If not, repeat the steps.
