When you drive a golf cart, you probably notice that you can only reach a top speed before the speed plateaus and refuses to go any faster. This is a safety measure put in place by the manufacturer to prevent injuries and to obey the posted speed limits in many small communities. This device is known as a governor because it governs your speed. Of course if you really want that golf cart to go a little faster, you can always reset the governor.
Instructions
1. Remove the driver’s side seat from your golf cart. The governor is behind or underneath this seat depending on the type of golf cart. On some models you may need to jack up the golf cart and in some you can just pull off a plastic seat to find the governor.
2. Look for a series of cables that attach the governor or a small black box to the throttle. These cables basically tell the governor when it needs to kick in based on your speed. Once you reach a certain speed, the governor kicks in and prevents you from going any faster.
3. Place a golf tee in the small opening at the top of the throttle; it will be the only opening you see. It doesn’t have to be a golf tee; you can use any small and thin wood piece that will fit in the hole. This forces the throttle to stay open, which causes the governor to override and reset to a new speed.
4. Check to see if you a T-shaped piece of metal on your motor instead of the small black box. This piece of metal is what the governor on a club golf cart looks like and in this case you’ll need to change your reset method.
5. Attach a larger rubber band or a small piece of string to the longer part of the T in the middle to the cylindrical metal piece behind the governor. This forces the governor to stop moving back and forth so that it no longer regulates your speed. You’ve now reset the governor and can go at any speed you want.
