Raffles are an ideal way to raise money for charity.
A responsible team of volunteers is essential for a successful raffle, which is the lifeblood of many charities for generating revenue. Many people are willing to help out and business will often offer to give prizes away for a slice of the advertisement. Raffles are closely monitored by law, so you must familiarize yourself with the rules in your jurisdiction before you begin. However, when hosting a raffle for a charity, much of the paperwork will be completed by officials with the organization.
Instructions
1. Explain your intentions to the charity for which you're conducting a raffle. Meet with a charity representative to decide where and when you want to host your raffle. Raffles are most successful at large gatherings such as sporting events. Have multiple people collect contributions from several areas by sending ticket sellers to these locations.
2. Research your state's raffle laws by finding your state at rafflefaq.com. Review rules such as the legal limit of tickets to be sold for a large prize.
3. Include other stakeholders in your meeting, such as representatives from the stadium or sports team who will facilitate the venue for the raffle. Discuss how you will sell tickets. For example, you may want to hold a 50/50 draw -- which returns half the accumulated funds to a lucky purchaser of a ticket -- or sell baked goods.
4. Determine a prize. You could have several small prizes and one large prize. These could be money prizes or otherwise. The 50/50 draws are always cash prizes. If you must purchase the prize from a business, determine with your team how much you are willing to spend. Solicit businesses and mention the fact they will be promoted with a banner or otherwise for a prize contribution.
5. Assign jobs. For example, decide who will purchase the prize, or collect donations from businesses, and who will sell the tickets. If you are selling baked goods, decide who will bake them.
6. Print the raffle tickets or purchase tickets already made by a vendor who sells bulk raffle tickets. Ensure the tickets are numbered.
7. Give the tickets to the people who will be selling them. Set a time and place to turn in the proceeds from the draw.
8. Name a location in which you will distribute the prizes and who will give them away.
