Prevent Blisters With Lotion

Using a lotion or balm on your feet can help prevent blisters.

Eliminating friction is the best way to prevent blisters, which occur when your layers of skin separate and pockets of fluid or air form between the layers. This can happen when you wear shoes that are too small or too big, when your feet get sweaty and slide around in your shoes, and when your feet rub against seams in your shoes or socks.

Using particular lotions, salves, creams and balms, you can create a protective barrier for the skin on your feet before wearing shoes that haven't been broken in yet or before going on a long walk, run or hike.

Instructions

1. Choose a product to apply to your feet. Petroleum jelly, aloe vera cream, vitamin E cream and balms that are intended for use on the udders of cows are frequently used by runners to eliminate chafing and prevent blisters.

You can also purchase products that are specifically intended for preventing foot blisters, such as Footglide Foot Formula or Dr. Scholl's Miracle Shield. These come in a roll-on container like deodorant, for easy application.

2. Apply the lubricant thoroughly to all areas of the feet that will be rubbing against your shoes. Pay particular attention to your ankles and the outer areas of your big toe and little toe.

3. Reapply the lubricant as necessary. If you are wearing a pair of new shoes or uncomfortable high heels all day or if you are going on a long hike or run, take the lubricant with you and reapply it whenever you stop to take a break.
