Register a Nonprofit Organization Quickly and Easily


Registering a nonprofit organization is a multi-step process that can be difficult without the proper guidance. You may have everything ready and planned out, but if you fail to get the proper approval then you will not legally be able to operate. Use the following steps to help get your nonprofit organization off the ground.

1. Write the bylaws for your organization if you have not already done so. These should include rules and regulations under which your organization operates, and how your organization will achieve its goals.


2. Compose the Articles of Incorporation for your organization and file them with the appropriate government agency. Be sure to have the articles approved by your board of directors.


3. Apply for an Employer Identification Number, EIN. This number is required to open a bank account on the behalf of your organization and for filing for tax exempt status.


4. Apply for 501c3 tax-exempt status. Because of the large number of individuals interested in starting a nonprofit organization, this process may be difficult. Do not get discouraged if you are asked to provide more information or are not approved immediately. You may to choose to enlist the help of a lawyer to help you through the entire registering process.


5. If your organization serves a charitable, educational, scientific, religious or cultural purpose, file for federal tax exemption. Obtain Internal Revenue Service, IRS, form 1023 to apply for federal tax exemption.


6. Obtain a fund raising license, if necessary. Laws regulating nonprofit organizations vary slightly from state to state, so be sure to inquire about any licenses or permits your organization may require.


7. Set up and maintain a record keeping system. Most states require for all important documents, such as board meeting minutes, financial records or any other important documents, be kept for the life of the organization.


8. Get insurance. Depending on the nature of your organization, you may be required to have insurance for the safety of your clients and volunteers.


9. Be prepared to pay the appropriate fees for filing for incorporation.
