Plan A Benefit Fundraiser

Fundraiser benefits are often more successful than straight donations.

Benefit fundraisers are special events that are used for the purpose of raising money for a specific cause. Whether for a charity, a person or people in need or a non-profit organization, benefit fundraisers are a way to raise a substantial amount of money in a relatively short amount of time. Popular types of benefit fundraisers include formal dinners, gold tournaments, fashion shows and card games. Practically any event that people in a community would be eager to attend can be turned into a successful fundraising event.

Instructions

1. Define what the goal of your fundraiser benefit is. It is important to people that they know why money is being raised and what it is being used for. The more people understand the purpose of your fundraiser, the more likely they will be to participate. Put the goal into concise words and commit them to paper. They will guide you through the rest of your efforts.

2. Decide what type of benefit you would like to have. Take your particular community into account when planning your event. If you know that the vast majority of the citizens in your area are young families with young children, then scheduling a fancy dress ball that would require families to arrange for childcare may not be the best option. Likewise, if you have a strong senior citizen presence, a walk-a-thon may only yield you limited results.

3. Secure a viable location for your event. Communicate to the venue owner what the purpose of your event is, and ask if they would be willing to either offer a discount on the cost of using their facilities or donate them outright.

4. Design giveaways and premiums that contributors will be given for assisting. T-shirts, shopping bags and hats printed with your event's information are popular and well-received gifts. This is another opportunity to request a either a discount on or donation of goods and or services from whatever vendor you utilize.

5. Write a press release about your event, and email or fax it in to all of the local news media in your area. Speak to the community interest editors of any local newspapers and see if they would be interested in doing an interview and story on your event. Also reach out to local radio and television stations. Another effective source of publicity may be found through your local schools. Contact the PTO/PTA representatives and request that information on your event be included in a newsletter.

6. Organize a method for people to register for your event, and keep close track of all of your registered participants. You will want to be sure to thank them each publicly at the conclusion of the event.

7. Recruit volunteers to staff your event. If you are hosting an auction, you will need someone to take on the role of auctioneer. If you are hosting a fashion show, you will need not only models, but also an emcee. Regardless of what type of event you go with, you will need at least a few people to run your registration table.
