Set Up A Book Cover

Book covers should display the title, author's name and a graphic that intrigues the reader.

A properly set-up book cover features an image that is both intriguing and relevant to the text, while displaying the author's name and the title of the book. The cover should be printed on sturdy paper and fitted to the precise dimensions of the book. Because setting up a book cover is an artform, there are always exceptions to the rule. However, all book covers should be set up to attract the attention of the reader and prepare him for what will be found inside.

Instructions

1. Read the contents of the book. Identify what images are frequently referenced within the text. Select an image or graphic that doesn't compromise the story but reflects the content of the text. If the book features photographs, select a photograph from the work that is iconic and arresting. Choose an image that reflects the tone of the work; a reproduction of a classic painting will create a different mood than a playful cartoon.

2. Select a readable font for the title of the book and the author's name that does not feature elaborate serifs; sans serif fonts generally are the best choice, because the letters are more distinct and easier to read. Size the font appropriately; generally, the title and the author's name should take up no more than one-third each of the vertical space of the cover.

3. Create several mock covers with the selected font and cover image in different colors and positions. Gather opinions from publishing professionals, including graphic designers, editors and marketers. Apply your own subjective criteria to the cover, and then choose the final version.
