The iPhone offers runners tools for making runs more enjoyable.
Your iPhone keeps you in touch with friends and family, tracks your appointments, tells you the weather and keeps you distracted on long-haul trips with its myriad games. But for the fitness-conscious, the iPhone can also be a workout buddy. Running with your iPhone can involve a lot more than just listening to music while you pound the pavement or tackle the trail, and preparing your iPhone to be a running tool is quick and easy.
Instructions
1. Buy an arm or hip case/band to hold your iPhone while you run. Hard and soft cases are available through a number of manufacturers, such as Nike and In Case, both online and in-store. Not only do these cases protect your phone while you run, they also keep it out of the way -- no need to worry about it flopping around in your pocket or getting sweaty in your hand.
2. Load your iPhone with your favorite running music. There's nothing like the rhythmic pounding of 130 beats per minute to help you glide along during your run. Connect your iPhone to iTunes and download your running tracks. Then, choose the iPod function on your phone, plug in your headphones and use it as you would an iPod.
3. Download a running app from the iTunes store or through your phone's App Store. There are a number of apps to choose from, so shop around for one that fits your needs best. Some features to look for include a distance log, run scheduler, route planner and calories burned tracker. The "Log Your Run" and "iRun Original" apps offer good value for money, but there are also free apps that will do the trick, such as "Running Log" and "Personal Running Trainer."
