Massage Calves

Athletes, especially runners or sprinters, need help increasing the blood flow to the overworked muscles in their calves. After a grueling work out, give a sports massage to your fellow runner, and help the calves get the blood and oxygen they crave.

Instructions

1. Have your partner lie down face down. To give a sports massage to the calves, you will need to have full access to the entire lower portion of the legs.

2. Apply lotion to the calves. You should use a thick lotion that will help you get traction on the calves and isn't too slick.

3. Warm up the calves with the palms of your hands. Rub them quickly to create warmth. If there is a lot of hair on the calves, use enough lotion to avoid creating knots.

4. Spread the calves with the heels of your hands. Place the heels of your hands together, with your fingers facing away from each other. Start under the back of the knee, and apply pressure while pushing the heels of your hands apart. Repeat this motion, while inching down the calf, spreading the calves as you move down.

5. Use lighter strokes with a wringing motion. Begin with your fingers spread and twist slightly while bringing the fingers back together.

6. Squeeze the muscles in the calves rhythmically. Move up and down the calf squeezing the muscles from the back of the knee to the ankle. As you give the sports massage, use steady rhythms and cover each calf completely.
